Label TextAs the publisher of the "Canadian Free Press" (1853), renamed the "London Free Press" in 1855, until his death in 1890, Josiah Blackburn was an important Londoner. His paper provided insight into local, national, and international events to residents of the city and the region. Although it would be fascinating to have materials linked to Josiah’s newspaper work, it is also interesting to have this paint box. It gives a glimpse into the private life of a busy middle to upper class London resident of his time. Like members of the military and men of business, such as James Hamilton (1810-1896), Blackburn was an amateur artist. Sadly, no examples of his painting are known to have survived.
