Label TextAlthough worn, this log cabin spread illustrates Sarah Thomas Hopper’s skills and artistry. She hand-stitched cotton, wool, and silk “logs” around a red square, the “hearth” of the cabin. Hopper then pieced the blocks to create the straight furrow variant of the log cabin pattern. This pattern first appeared in spreads and quilts in the late 1820s but the design is far older. Ancient Egyptian animal mummies feature wrappings wound to create what we recognize as the log cabin. The worn parts of this spread show the way in which Hopper constructed it. She hand-sewed each “log” to a square piece of cotton cloth, the foundation. She then pieced together the different blocks to create the finished top.
