Label Text"On May 5, 1908 Mother received word that her aunt Libbie Hampton had died. Merton asked Mother to come to Orchard Park to help divide Libbie's belongings among the relatives. She hired Ethel Zavitz to help with the work and went by train. Mother's share: a round side table 30" in diameter with a 3-legged pedestal, 2 cane-seated dining chairs, a large cherry table with 20" wide drop leaves each made from a single board, each leaf supported by a swing leg, a rocking chair with slatted back & woven splint seat & a large pine chest with 2 small drawers at the bottom, was crated & shipped to Coldstream. All of these had been made in the early 1800s by Mother's grandfather who was a blacksmith, sawyer, and furniture maker. Even the hinges were handmade. She was also given a rocking chair with cane seat & back & a large round-topped trunk with metal strappings. The trunk was filled with pieced quilt tops, material, crocheted doilies & handmade lace."
