Label TextOn April 27, 1937, the Thames River rose 23 feet (7 metres) above its normal level. Police issued permits to flood zone homeowners to control access to the area. This sign alerted Londoners that only permit holders could enter the flood area. The flood caused an estimated $3 million ($18.6 million today) in damage. Later efforts to reduce flooding included the 1947 creation of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and the 1953 opening of the Fanshawe Dam.
