Label TextThe Flood of ’37 was the highest ever recorded on the Thames River and was the most destructive of life and property. Five deaths were attributed to the flood, an estimated 1,100 homes were ruined, and property damage ran to $3,000,000. The City of London was the hardest hit. In all, 545 acres of the city were flooded, and 1,075 buildings were affected, most of which were dwelling houses.
Permits like this granted access to the flood zone to property holders. At the same time, police patrolled the area to prevent looting of the some 2500 affected homes. People could only pass if they presented a permit.
