On April 26, 1937, the Thames River rose 23 feet (7 metres) above its normal level. Police issued permits to flood zone homeowners, including those who lived on Thames Street to control access to the area. Damage was estimated at $3 million ($18.6 million today). Later efforts to reduce flooding included the 1947 creation of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and the 1953 opening of the Fanshawe Dam.
