Label TextThe London Street Railway began operation with one line in 1875. Its launch began to change the way in which Londoners lived in the city. With public transit, more Londoners could live beyond walking distance from their places of work as well as from services and amenities. The introduction of the street railway and its evolution over the years, from horse-drawn to electrically powered trolleys, led to changes in infrastructure and support services as well. The LSR converted completely to buses in 1940 and crews lifted trolley tracks from London streets. Drivers rejoiced. Trolleys had been slow, and the tracks made for bumpy roads. Although buses were more economical, the LSR struggled in the post-war years. The city acquired it in 1951, renaming it the London Transit Commission.
