Label TextThis is a Thames Navigation Company ticket. In April of 1879, this company was the first to launch a steamer, the "Forest City," on the Thames. It carried passengers between the Forks of the Thames River and Springbank Park. Rival companies soon joined it. Only the 1878 construction of the Springbank dam made this possible because it resulted in deeper water levels. The last of the steamships wound up operations in 1899. A combination of disasters, competition from other nearby resort areas, as well as the electrification of the London Street Railway line to the park, made steamers unprofitable.
