Label TextFrom the late 1870s, several different companies operated steamships on the Thames River between London and Springbank Park. Only the 1878 construction of the Springbank dam made this possible because it resulted in deeper water levels. The last of the steamships wound up operations in 1899. A combination of disasters, competition from other nearby resort areas, as well as the electrification of the London Street Railway line to the park, made steamers unprofitable.Launched in April of 1879, the "Forest City" was the first of several steamboats to ply the Thames River through to the 1890s.
