Label TextThis 1970s era promotional poster advertises a hockey game between CFPL television personalities and the Delhi Flamettes at the Delhi Arena. The individuals illustrated on the poster, all popular during the 1970s, include: • Jack Burghardt FYI News at 6 p.m. anchor for much of the 1970s; • Bill Hutchings and Judy Savoy, weather reporters; • Alex Kelman, long-time sports broadcaster, founding member of the popular London Sports Celebrity Dinner, and longstanding announcer at London Majors games.; • Pirie Mitchell, host of "Junior Talent Hour" in the 1970’s with his St. Bernard dog co-star Peaches. When CFPL-TV first launched in 1953, it was one of the first private television stations in Canada. The state-of-the-art facility was built on the outskirts of London which is now known as Communications Road near the Westmount area. Founder Walter Blackburn, owner of the London Free Press and Blackburn Group, thought the notion of “radio with pictures” would resonate with the audience he already held and allow him to grow new audiences. As the only broadcaster in London for years, generations of audiences developed strong connections to the broadcasting personalities who became household names over the years. Before, during, and after the 1970s, charity sports events were popular. Celebrity broadcasters played against local clubs and service groups such as the Optimist Clubs and Kinsman and Kinettes to raise awareness and funds for various causes. Hosting lively events for the whole family featuring mascots, celebrities, prize draws, and kid’s activities were and still are a popular vehicle to drive support and fundraising for charities of all sizes. Further, many corporations are affiliated with causes in the community. Celebrities can be highly persuasive, and it seems likely that the CFPL personalities drew crowds and had a following during the 1970’s. Endorsements can go a long way in attracting event audiences and producing a connection to charitable causes.
