Label TextCapt. J. H. Barkley, of London, owned these badges. He served during the First World War from 1914 until its close in 1918. Captain Barkley arrived back in London, Ontario, on the 24th of May, 1919. Although the maple leaf was not an official symbol of Canada in 1914, Canadians viewed it that way. It featured prominently on the badges and buttons of Canadian uniforms during the First World War (1914-1918). The maple leaf still isn’t an official Canadian symbol, but the maple tree is. The government named it Canada’s official arboreal symbol in 1996.
