Label TextEmployees of the Ward Cigar factory pose outside the premises at 64 Dundas Street in this circa 1905 photograph. The industry employed many men. It also had women and children on staff who were far less expensive to employ. Offering further explanation, London cigar manufacturer John Rose noted in 1889, “women do not go on strike and do not get drunk.”
