Label TextDick Fisher used this wheelchair, obtained from a nearby family. It is a hybrid creation made of a plain wooden chair and a standard wheelchair body. Fisher contracted polio in August 1944. He was a large, healthy man at the time which was helpful in counteracting the devastating effects of the disease. He was in isolation at Victoria Hospital for a year where he refused to go into the iron lung. He was released from hospital and confined to bed where he conducted a hay buying business, later adding stocks and then insurance policies.
