Calomel Tablets Bottle

Credit LineGift of Dr. J. Malcolm Smith, London, Ontario, 1999
Object number1999.003.150
Label TextThis bottle came from the pharmacy operated by William Edwin Saunders, who had taken over and expanded the business his father established in the 1850s. Calomel, otherwise known as mercurous chloride, was one of the many products W. E. Saunders sold. Although a dangerous and poisonous substance, it had long been used to cure disease. In the era of "heroic medicine," the effect of calamoel on the body - vomiting and diarrhea - seemed to suggest it was fighting illness and disease. In addition to working a pharmacist, Saunders was an avid amateur ornithologist and naturalist, a founder of the McInlwraith Ornithological Society, now called Nature London.
