Label TextIn 1890, Alfred Holman (#11 in the image) and his wife, Blanche, helped found the London Amateur Operatic Association. Holman’s mother, Harriet (#13 in the image), was a keen contributor too. The Holman’s had a history of performing in London. In 1873, the Holman English Opera Company became London’s first professional theatre group. It featured parents George and Harriet Holman, their children, Sallie, Alfred, and Julia, as well as other family members and performers. Sallie Holman was the undisputed star of the Holman English Opera Company. With her siblings, she began touring as a child in her parents’ Holman Juvenile Opera Company. Sallie’s 1888 death spelled the end of the group.
