"Balkwill's Hotel" Sign

Label TextWilliam Balkwill, brother to John Balkwill who established the London Brewery, operated a hotel at the corner of Talbot and King streets. The hotel occupied what had been the first town hall after the new city hall opened in 1855. The hotel, with this sign on it, appears in the background of Paul Peel's 1883 painting of Covent Garden market.
