Powders could be mixed together to create a prescription or administered by doctors to speed up absorption. It is likely that this mortar and pestle was used for pharmaceutical purposes. Traditionally, pharmaceutical mortars and the heads of pestles are ceramic, and the pestles have wooden handles.
