Label TextMerle "Ting" Tingley made this paper-mache statue of Luke Worm in 1949. For a time, he lived in Ting’s "London Free Press" office. He not only gave Ting some of his best ideas. He also held his pipes, cigars, and paintbrushes – sometimes all at once. Luke Worm wriggled down Ting’s pen in 1948. He appeared in all but five of Ting’s some 12,000 cartoons, created over a 40-year career. It’s undeniable that Ting and Luke Worm were inseparable. Sometimes he was small. Other times he played the leading role to drive home Ting’s messages. Londoners of all ages searched for Luke Worm in every one of Ting’s cartoons.
