Label TextArielle Kayabaga distributed these campaign door hangers during her 2018 bid to become councillor for London’s Ward 13. The election took place on October 22, 2018. Kayabaga, who was born in Burundi, Africa, won the tight race, becoming the first black female city councillor in London. Although she was the only visible minority candidate in the race for the Ward 13 seat, Kayabaga asked voters to focus on her skills and personal qualities. She graduated from Carleton University in 2013, where she studied political science and African studies. Kayabaga said that she still had to work hard to explain to prospective voters why it was okay for her, a refugee from Africa and a young woman, to represent them. Asked why she ran in 2018, Kayabaga explained, “I do think that there is power in representation. I do think that there is something that happens that breaks barriers.” In 2021, was successful in her bid to become federal MP for London West.
