Architect Samuel Peters’ 1853 Covent Garden Market building (middle) anchors London’s retail hub. The building is bordered on its left by Market Lane (today’s Covent Market Place), King Street to its right, and Talbot Street to its west. That cars outnumber people in this photograph is prophetic. From the 1950s, planners and developers reconfigured the city centre to accommodate the exponential growth in car ownership in the region.
